Frequently Asked Questions about Powder Coating
What is Powder Coating ?
Powder Coating is a finishing process in which a fine dry plastic powder paint material is charged with electricity and sprayed on the part surface to be finished. The part is charged with an opposite electrical charge and attracts the powder coat material to it in an even consistency. The part is then placed in an oven and baked at 400 degrees F, allowing the powder paint to melt and flow into a beautiful and durable finish.
What are the advantages of using a Powder Coat Finish ?
Powder Coating produces a superior finish that is attractive, consistent and can add extended life and durability to your product. This finish can resist marring, cracking, or peeling, and because of less porosity, there are fewer surface imperfections. The use of Powder Coating offers excellent resistance to corrosion, heat, abrasion, UV rays and chemical resistance. This finish also provides excellent performance in extreme weather conditions.
Is Powder Coating a new Process ?
The Powder Coating process has been around for many years and has been used by manufacturers for a long time. Chances are very good that you own something with a Powder Coat finish. Powder coating finishes can be found on automobile parts, recreational vehicles, boats, bicycles, patio furniture, mail boxes, garden tools, and in many other applications. Powder Coating is a superior finish that extends the life of any part that uses it. Powder Coating is even used for corrosion protection on highway and bridge construction
Is any Preparation Required for Powder Coating ?
In general, parts are sand blasted down to bare metal to create a rough surface for good adhesion and powder bonding. A chemical cleaner is then used to remove all contaminants from the part's surface. Parts are then baked to assure a moisture and contaminant free surface that will bond with powder and produce the best finish. Specifically, we can offer preparation treatments of a five stage chemical process or the media blast depending on your needs.
Does the Powder Coating Process Offer any Other Advantages ?
Powder coating is a very environmentally friendly process compared to other finishing methods. There is less over spray because of the electrostatic attraction of the coating material to the surface being finished. Also, the over spray can easily be collected and even re-used. In addition to it's suberb protection qualities, Powder Coating also offers an outstanding array of color finishes to suite most needs. Approvals and Certifications include Food & Drug Administration (FDA), United States Department of Agriculture,(USDA), and Underwritters Laboratories Inc.(UL).
